Guide to Dental Medications: What You Should Know

Depending on the type of dental procedure you're having, you may be prescribed medication. These medications may be prescribed before or after your procedure, for one of several different purposes, including:

  • Relieving post-operative pain from procedures such as root canals, teeth extractions, and other oral surgeries.
  • To prevent or fight a bacterial infection.
  • Sedatives may also be given before a procedure to help a patient relax.

It's important for patients to disclose their medical history as accurately and thoroughly as possible, including medications currently being taken, and allergies to medications, in order to prevent unfortunate side effects or consequences.

As with any medication you would receive at the doctor's office, it's also important that you follow all instructions for dosage, frequency, and more. In the case of medications used to fight or prevent infections, they will typically need to be finished in entirety even if symptoms are no longer present.

We'll always be sure to instruct you on what you're being given, and why, as well as any specific instructions or guidelines that you'll need to follow.
