Sleep Apnea and Children - What to Look For and What to Know

When it comes to your child's sleeping habits and his or her health, there's a lot to know. This also happens to be a complex subject that most parents don't understand much about.

Of course, at Parmar Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, patient health and education, and their all-around wellbeing, are all top priorities. That's child with sleep apneawhy it's important for us to help explain the issue of sleep apnea and children, and how this may be having an impact on other aspects of your child's life.

We all know that as adults, when we don't get enough sleep, we get tired. It may feel like you're sleepwalking through the day and you always need that next dose of caffeine. We've all been there before at one time or another certainly.

On the other hand, and this is surprising to learn for many parents, when their children aren't getting enough sleep, the opposite reaction takes place. Kids become hyperactive, and this behavior issue can even lead to a misdiagnosis of ADD, or ADHD. We believe that medicating a child to keep him or her calm is never a top solution, especially when it’s based on an inaccurate diagnosis.

In fact, just recently a patient came into our office and child said she snored and she knew because her parents talked about it. Dr. Parmar continued with appropriate questioning, which revealed she was having hard time focusing in school and parents were looking into getting special help. On evaluation by Dr. Parmar patient’s airway was compromised with big tonsils affecting facial, jaw growth and breathing passage way. Appropriate referral to ENT surgeon was given and Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy was done which completely solve the issue at hand, to the surprised delight of both parents and child alike.

Many different factors could lead to a child's sleeping problems, and sleep apnea is something which must not be ignored. We can help your child  by screening for sleep apnea with appropriate referral and treatment to diagnose and cure both the underlying core issue, and the related symptoms and effects which occur.

Some symptoms to look out for in children that could point to Sleep Apnea:

  • Snoring, stops breathing or gasping for air while sleeping
  • If your child is a restless sleeper
  • Do they grind teeth at night?
  • Wet the bed?
  • Breath more through mouth?
  • Have allergies?
  • Large tonsils and adenoids?
  • Get lot of sore throats?
  • Get lot of ear infections?
  • Are they hyperactive?

You don't need to turn to medication to stop a child's hyperactivity, especially when ADD/ADHD isn't even the real culprit. The first step is to simply make an appointment, express your concerns and the relevant details, and begin exploring the diagnosis and treatment options which are available.

At Parmar Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Parmar and our team will go the extra step to ensure you receive the utmost in customer service, tailored treatments based upon your needs, attention to detail, and more. Your child deserves the best, and that's we strive for, particularly with the issue of sleep apnea and children which is so often misunderstood.
