TMD symptoms such as TMJ pain and headaches get worse with stress. We all like to consider the holidays as one of the happiest times of the year. But we're also all too familiar with the increased stress and aggravation of the season, whether it's dealing with the crazy crowds at stores and malls, making busy travel arrangements, or anything else, it's easy to become stressed during this time of year. Unfortunately, for many millions of adults, this increased stress leads directly to increased pain, soreness and headaches as a result of underlying TMJ issues.

The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. We all use this joint constantly in our lives, such as when we're eating and speaking. TMD, temporomandibular joint disorders, can cause chronic pain, headaches, soreness, discomfort, bad posture and more.

So how does stress come into the picture? Many people when stressed will clench and grind their teeth. This can exacerbate the underlying TMJ issues which are present, and cause severe migraines and a variety of other TMD symptoms.

Most TMJ treatments either a) focus on the symptom, the headache or pain, and therefore provide pain killers or b) focus on the action of teeth grinding instead of diagnosing and treating the condition as TMD.

Neither of these options present a viable long-term solution to the core issue. To finally see long-lasting and effective improvements in your symptoms, you can't just pop pain killers or try not to clench and grind your teeth. You need to correct the TMJ issues which are present.

You can always give yourself a basic pre-diagnosis: Does your jaw make a clicking or popping noise when you chew food or yawn? Then it's quite likely that you have TMD.

We'll be able to identify and diagnose those issues concretely through Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation, or TENS, which relaxes your facial muscles and allows us to find out what's going on behind the scenes, so to speak.

At Parmar Dentistry, we offer a variety of treatments to help achieve successful outcomes for TMJ disorder patients. This includes custom bite splints, orthotic appliances, and from there, permanent adjustments made via fitting crowns or bridges, reshaping teeth enamel, and if necessary, orthodontic treatment.

So if your holiday stress deals you a double dose of pain, headaches and other related issues, you may have underlying TMJ issues which need treatment.
