What is Fluoride? Facts & Important Information

Surely you're familiar with the word "fluoride", but do you know what it is, why it's important, or how you actually get it? If not, continue reading below, and gain important insight into fluoride.

  • So, what is fluoride? Fluoride is a mineral compound of the element fluorine, which occurs naturally throughout nature.
  • Fluoride is important for your dental health because it's absorbed into structures including bones and teeth, fortifying them, and making them more resistant to fractures and decay. Within the body, the process of remineralization uses fluoride to actually repair damage to teeth caused by decay.
  • Most Americans get their fluoride via water fluoridation, a process which began as early as the 1940s, and is now widespread and available to hundreds of millions of Americans. By adding fluoride to the public water supply, it can be easily absorbed into tooth enamel, and is obtained in a hassle-free method.
  • However, in addition to water fluoridation, many toothpastes and even certain mouthwashes or topical gels contain fluoride. Fluoride may also be obtained from certain teas, soda and other beverages.
  • Is fluoride safe? Fluoride is safe, although swallowing fluoride in large amounts could pose a health risk, and too much fluoride for young children could cause a condition known as enamel fluorosis.
