Gingivitis Treatment & Information

Gingivitis is the official term for early gum disease, which in turn is also known as periodontal disease, and when severe,  periodontitis. Here, learn more about gingivitis, and treatment for gingivitis.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria, and the buildup of plaque, caused by leftover food particles. Early warning signs will include chronic bad breath, tender or painful gums which become swollen, and red or purple as opposed to pink, and bleeding after brushing or flossing.

Additionally, pregnancy may also cause gingivitis, due to hormonal changes which promote plaque production.

If left untreated, gingivitis may lead to bone loss, severe periodontitis, abscesses, and tooth loss.

The good news is that gingivitis can be treated, and reversed. One treatment for gingivitis is scaling and root planing, which is cleaning, scraping and smoothing below the actual gum line. This will help gums reattach to the teeth themselves, removing gaps or pockets where bacteria buildup had been collecting. However, if these pockets persist, additional measures may need to be taken.

The best weapon against gingivitis is proper oral health and hygiene at home, as well as regular scheduled cleanings. Brush twice per day, at least, and floss and use mouthwash daily as well.
