It's no secret that most children are sad at the end of summer, and the start of another school year. Still, it can be an exciting time of the year, back to school means back to the dentist - schedule an appointment with a dentist when school startsas children get to embark on new adventures, reconnect with their friends and classmates, and continue through educational journey and development into adulthood.

There are many tasks and to-dos, from buying school supplies and shopping for new clothes, to getting back into the routine and schedule of school, ferrying children around to their sports and activities, and everything else. Still, it's equally important that at this time of the year you add another small task to the list, and that's scheduling your child's regular dental cleaning appointment.

Many parents lose track of when their kids have last been to the dentist, and when they're due for another cleaning or checkup. However, if you coincide the visit with the start of the school year each September, you'll never lose track. Your kids will even expect it and get into the yearly routine that back to school means time for a quick trip to the dentist as well.

As it's recommended that kids visit the dentist twice per year for cleanings and other basic dental examinations, occasional x-rays and so forth, this takes care of one of those immediately, and will make managing the second appointment at a later date easier as well.

A beginning of the school year dental appointment for kids may also be well-timed for several other reasons. For children playing sports, it can be an opportunity to get fitted for mouth guards or other protective gear.

Meanwhile, it can also be a great time to address an ignored snoring problem, which may actually be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. This not only puts your child at a health risk, but may also be hindering his or her ability to study, to concentrate in class, and to have their full, normal energy levels during the day. Finding out more about this at the start of the year and addressing these concerns can help your child have a happier and more productive year of school than ever before.

Even if you have lost track of your children's dental appointments in the past, it's not too late to start a new routine. Schedule a cleaning for your kids at the start of the school year. Call us at 410.531.5639 and we'll be happy to help you schedule your next appointment for the kids and the whole family.

At Parmar Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we've helped many individuals who have been suffering from sleep apnea.

Each patient, and his or her own story, is different. They may be experiencing different symptoms, or have different root causes of their mouthpiece to help sleep apneacondition. They may also prefer one treatment to the next.

We place a premium on finding tailor-made solutions to each person's specific circumstances, and that's how we were able to help Christina with an oral appliance.

Christina was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2009, and her Physician provided her with a CPAP machine. It's the solution that other family members had utilized in the past, and it's what her Sleep Physician recommended. However, for her, it made the problem even worse. It took her hours to fall asleep, she was never comfortable or felt restful, and her quality of life was diminishing.

Eventually, she had enough, and she needed an alternative solution. That's when she turned to Parmar Family & Cosmetic Dentistry and learned more about an oral appliance.

This proved to be a life-changing decision for Christina.

"I can't live without it now," she says.

Before this, Christina had been on multiple medications to cope with depression, anxiety and sleeping problems. Within six weeks of trying the oral appliance, she began to stop using her medications entirely. She felt completely different and renewed, and was able to lose weight and enjoy improved all-around health.

She says it changed the quality of her life tremendously. Her coworkers noticed improvements in her performance around the workplace, and she was promoted. Her family also noticed the changes in her personality and energy, and the difference that the oral appliance made for her.

"Every time I wake up, I feel like I can get up and go," she says. She doesn't have to press the snooze button, she's ready to go out there and take on the world.

Christina needed a practical solution which fit into her active lifestyle and enabled her to thrive once again.

From improvements in her energy levels to better job performance, feeling rested and healthy, losing weight, ditching her medications and more, an oral appliance from Parmar Family & Cosmetic Dentistry was able to come to the rescue for Christina.

We pride ourselves on the positive impact we have on our patients, and we couldn't be happier for Christina and the results she has seen and neither can she. View her testimonial and hear her story on our YouTube channel.

If you have sleep apnea or are concerned that you might, then call us today at 410-531-5639 to schedule an appointment for an evaluation. We'll tell you more about how we can help, and hopefully have the same kind of impact on your life as we were able to have with Christina's.

Sleep Apnea and Children - What to Look For and What to Know

When it comes to your child's sleeping habits and his or her health, there's a lot to know. This also happens to be a complex subject that most parents don't understand much about.

Of course, at Parmar Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, patient health and education, and their all-around wellbeing, are all top priorities. That's child with sleep apneawhy it's important for us to help explain the issue of sleep apnea and children, and how this may be having an impact on other aspects of your child's life.

We all know that as adults, when we don't get enough sleep, we get tired. It may feel like you're sleepwalking through the day and you always need that next dose of caffeine. We've all been there before at one time or another certainly.

On the other hand, and this is surprising to learn for many parents, when their children aren't getting enough sleep, the opposite reaction takes place. Kids become hyperactive, and this behavior issue can even lead to a misdiagnosis of ADD, or ADHD. We believe that medicating a child to keep him or her calm is never a top solution, especially when it’s based on an inaccurate diagnosis.

In fact, just recently a patient came into our office and child said she snored and she knew because her parents talked about it. Dr. Parmar continued with appropriate questioning, which revealed she was having hard time focusing in school and parents were looking into getting special help. On evaluation by Dr. Parmar patient’s airway was compromised with big tonsils affecting facial, jaw growth and breathing passage way. Appropriate referral to ENT surgeon was given and Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy was done which completely solve the issue at hand, to the surprised delight of both parents and child alike.

Many different factors could lead to a child's sleeping problems, and sleep apnea is something which must not be ignored. We can help your child  by screening for sleep apnea with appropriate referral and treatment to diagnose and cure both the underlying core issue, and the related symptoms and effects which occur.

Some symptoms to look out for in children that could point to Sleep Apnea:

  • Snoring, stops breathing or gasping for air while sleeping
  • If your child is a restless sleeper
  • Do they grind teeth at night?
  • Wet the bed?
  • Breath more through mouth?
  • Have allergies?
  • Large tonsils and adenoids?
  • Get lot of sore throats?
  • Get lot of ear infections?
  • Are they hyperactive?

You don't need to turn to medication to stop a child's hyperactivity, especially when ADD/ADHD isn't even the real culprit. The first step is to simply make an appointment, express your concerns and the relevant details, and begin exploring the diagnosis and treatment options which are available.

At Parmar Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Parmar and our team will go the extra step to ensure you receive the utmost in customer service, tailored treatments based upon your needs, attention to detail, and more. Your child deserves the best, and that's we strive for, particularly with the issue of sleep apnea and children which is so often misunderstood. Please call us today at 410.531.5639 with any questions, or to schedule your next appointment.

Adult Braces - Six Months vs. 2 Year Long-Term Orthodontics

At Parmar Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we now offer our patients Six Months Smiles braces for adults. Clarksville, MD residents should be happy to know that that we're actually one of just a few providers throughout Howard County, Maryland and this portion of the state. Of course, before you jump right in, it's important to learn more about Six Month Smiles, the benefits of adult braces, and how they compare to two year or long-term orthodontics.

Traditional braces have many drawbacks, especially when compared directly to an alternative such as Six Month Smiles. Conventional systems require a long-term commitment, and are intrusive in terms of the procedures required to place and remove the orthodontics, as well as their effect on your lifestyle and appearance.

However, the benefits of adult braces with Six Month Smiles make the entire process easier, smoother and more efficient. As the name implies, this is a six month program based on average completion time. You aren't committing for a period of years, and you don't have to wait years to see results.

Another one of the benefits of adult braces is that they're actually tailored to what adults are actually looking for. These aren't designed to produce intensive realignment based upon the needs of a child who still has a growing body and developing teeth, but instead, rapid and cosmetic changes targeting the most visible areas of your smile.

Of course, Six Month Smiles is an invisible braces system, utilizing tooth-colored wiring and clear brackets. If you don't tell anybody you have them, then they won't even realize that they're there. Compare that to the awkward, clunky appearance of traditional braces which will help you stand out from the crowd at nearly any distance, in a way you're certainly not looking forward to.

To top it all off, consider the fact that Six Month Smiles is more affordable than conventional orthodontics, as well as veneers and aligner therapy as well, another fantastic one of the great benefits of adult braces. Clarksville, MD adults can be well on their way to a happier and more confident future starting today, and it's all possible with Six Month Smiles.

So please feel free to call our office at 410.531.5639 if you need more information or want to schedule a consultation to receive Six Month Smiles adult braces.
